Gimme a "C" !

Sometimes you can do everything JUST right and still mess up, right?  Take Caroline's birthday cake for example.  Sweet Caroline is a cheerleader for the Jackets, so she wanted a cheerleading cake for her big day.

I got her mascot's logo, made little custom flags, and even printed out a birthday sash.   I sculpted a megaphone cake topper, made gumpaste star doomies, and put a cute harlequin pattern around the cake.

I even topped it all with a modeling chocolate 3.  But Caroline was FOUR!  Now her Mom noticed it right away, and I immediately made a replacement "4" out of some modeling chocolate, but it still left me feeling off my game a bit.  It certainly left me with a new resolve and commitment to read each order several times while working on the cake.

Anyone using Digital Cutting Machines?

A few weeks ago, Bakerella blogged about the upcoming release of the Cricut Cake.  This is a machine that lets you cut shapes directly out of gumpaste.

Of course, I read this about 4 days after purchasing the QuickCutz Silhouette SD cutting system.  Mike McCarey spoke very highly about the SD when I took his modeling chocolate class back in the fall.  I have been playing with it for a few days, but I haven't used it on any cakes yet.  I can tell you that it does make one heckuva cute gift bow!!

I still think I want to get the new Cricut Cake when it comes out, but my question to all my readers out there today is are you currently using a cutting system to enhance your cakes?  And if so, in what respect?

Even Batman had a Sidekick

Not so long ago, before iPhones, Droids, and Black-berries were all the rage, some folks just couldn't live without their Sidekick.

Take Roy for example.  He was so attached to his Sidekick that his friends decided to get it immortalized in cake for his 18th birthday.

This crazy birthday cake was sculpted cake covered in fondant, with fondant accents.  Chad made the keyboard and screen graphics using his graphics program and then printed them out on edible images.  The screen was made from gumpaste.

My one regret is that the screen didn't want to stay up.  I finally used a small tin to help support the lid.

Have a great weekend and thanks SO much for stopping by!!

Hey Hey Hey... it's Fat Tuesday!

As if New Orleans didn't already have enough to celebrate with the Saints winning the Super Bowl, today is Mardi Gras!

Now, there aren't many Mardi Gras celebrations here in Georgia, and I would dare say there's not a lot of beads given out either, but I did have a customer that wanted to celebrate her Sweet Sixteen with a Mardi Gras inspired cake.

We decided to go with a tilty / wonky cake design, covered in fondant.  We decorated with fondant stripes, polka dots, ribbons, and even a bead border.  We even made the mask out of gumpaste!  Some feathers at the top and around the cake board added that little extra flair that the cake needed!

As always thanks for stopping by!

Happy Valentine's Day

Ah, it's February and love is definitely in the air!  Sunday is Valentine's Day (and also my Mommy's birthday - Happy early Birthday Mommy!!) and the bakery is full of racks of pink and red hearts just waiting to be placed on all the Valentine's Day cakes I have to do today.  I did reach back into the archives though and pulled out a cake from last year's Valentines Day orders.

This cute little cake is a 3 tiered butter cream cake, with ribbon borders and loads of fondant hearts.  My customer wanted a little extra "cutesy" for good measure and so I cut up a feather boa and made a few feather "doomies" for the cake.

So everyone have a great weekend and a fantastic, love-filled Valentine's Day.  I leave you all with a cute quote about Valentine's Day...

I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day.  When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon!

DeLorean Cake Featured on GreatWhiteSnark!

Last week, we had the great honor of having one of our cakes featured on another blog, GreatWhiteSnark.com!  If you're not familiar GreatWhiteSnark, they feature cool things that are "geeky" in nature (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.).  A while back, we blogged about the DeLorean cake we did for our friends wedding.  Chad submitted it to GreatWhiteSnark and they said they would love to share it with their readers.

Click here to see their blog post, but I wanted to share a little more with my readers.  I dug through the Cup a Dee Cake Archives and found a few pictures of the DeLorean cake "in progress".  Without further ado, here are some pictures you won't find on GWS, they are a Cup a Dee Cakes exclusive!!

At this point the DeLorean has been carved and coated in buttercream, with modeling chocolate on the hood, top, and back.

Here's the car after it had been covered in fondant and most of the car's lines scored into the cake.

And this is the DeLorean in it's final stages.  At this point,  the windows have been exposed, it has been airbrushed silver, and placed on the cake board.  There is a small styrofoam riser that lifts the car off the cake board to accommodate the wheels (which are still MIA in this picture).

Well, that's it for now.  Stay tuned... you never know where you'll see our cakes turn up next!

Animal House!

Recently, I did a cute little cake for young James.  His Mom brought by his party invitations that had the cutest little jungle animals on them.  We used these invitations as inspiration.

Most of the cake is buttercream, but I molded the tiger, giraffe, and monkey out of fondant.

This time, we also made a smash cake.  For first birthdays, we actually sell quite a few of these.  Sometimes my clients get them before the birthday, to use as props for photographs.  Sometimes they just get them so that the birthday boy/girl can grab, smoosh, and rub it in their hair!  What about the other bakers out there... do you do a lot of smash cakes?

Scenes from the Chattanooga Bridal Show

So last weekend we setup a display / tasting booth at the "Premier Bridal" Bridal Show in lovely downtown Chattanooga TN.  This was our little 10 x 10 home away from home for four hours on Sunday.  We met SO many happy couples looking to sure up all their wedding needs.

Our "dummy" cakes were a big hit, as well as the cupcake samples we brought.  We brought 1000 cupcakes, and at the end of the show we only had about 200 left!
